In a Nutshell

Cripes! I haven't written a blog post since August. It's a lovely rainy afternoon, and since my lessons for the day have been cancelled, I figured it was time for an update from Kaslo, BC. Here we go-the past four months, in a nutshell.

You know what? I just started writing, and I can't remember what I've been doing for the last four months. Let's go on a visual tour instead, because I do have evidence of my comings and goings in my phone.

I may have included this photo in my last post in August-I can't remember. But it's still one of my favourite photos of a kid, ever. Josiah, 2, as loud motorcycles zoomed by on Washington Street.

A classic photo of mama and Auntie Yvonne. My dad did a painting of this photo, which has always hung somewhere at my parents' house. I want this photo framed on my wall!

I'm excited to walk these streets in flip-flops again. Front Street in early fall.

This is Jordie's 'I'm still hungry' face.

Sometimes bears wander through town, and people shoo them from their yards like they were dogs.

This is my 'I need a refill' face.

I bought about 14 squash at Mariposa Farms in Keremeos in the fall. Jordie thought I was going overboard, but he was singing a different tune when I started making red Thai curry with butternut squash and cod from the fish bus.

Looks like SOMEONE has a new favourite t-shirt! (It came with the chainsaw I got him for his birthday from the Irly Bird).

Me and Jordie in Lytton, around the beginning of October. Ah, the simplicity of getting in a car and going somewhere that has other people.

Jordie and Neko take a snuggle break.

I have two words to say about this fish bus that rolls into town every once in awhile: CRAB CAKES.

The giant didn't mind being climbed on by this little band of ruffians. In fact, he was sorry to see them go.

Washington Street on one of those Vancouver rainy days.

Fall 2020: Kid in jeans drinks tea out of tiny cup.

Leah and her hair open up a birthday present from mom and dad.

I got this paper mache skull as one of the gifts in my birthday box from my parents-I think dad painted it-and I'm saving it to scare Jordie with one day when he least suspects it.

One of Kaslo's old churches (St. Andrew's? United? I can never remember) looking very handsome in fall colours.

The kids came by to have some leftover Halloween candy. My favourite was the mini Snickers bars. They were also wondering if I'd made any strawberry popsicles yet. Suddenly I have a craving for a Reese's peanut butter cup.

The Treehouse re-opened after some renovations this fall, and I was very excited. When any new (or renovated) restaurant opens in town, it's a big day. I think I went twice by myself for coffee and eggs and toast in the first couple days they were open. In this photo, Jordie is enjoying his breakfast, lamenting the fact that we were wearing the same plaid shirt.

Kane's Landing Corner Store opened a few houses down from ours, and I got really excited. Coffee and chips just a few steps away! I'm still excited about it. For those non-Kaslo folks reading, it's a big deal to have a store in Upper Kaslo! On the first day they opened, I went over for a coffee and a spinach-feta spanakopita. I did that thing where I roll my eyes back in my head as a result of something tasting too good for words. Also, the idea of a corner store being open on my street makes me want to have a kid just so I can flip them a toonie sometimes and tell them to go and grab me a coffee. Doesn't that sound grand?

Even though I've seen this warning sign several times now, I know that I will never be prepared for the moment, one day, when a family of toads crosses my path on a ski trail.

Every year, we go and cut down a Christmas tree. Every year, we say we're going to bring 'a flask of something' and then either forget, or don't feel like it. Every year, we debate whether something is or isn't a Charlie Brown Christmas tree.

Toasting to a new year! I made it to 12:15am, even though at 6:15pm I was already tired enough to fall asleep. Happy New Year!
